DASHAIN: THE GREATEST HINDU FESTIVAL

Dashain is already at our door. The blissful spring has brought along with the longest and the most awaited festivals of the year. With Dashain happiness, prosperity, blessings of Goddess Durga along with a long vacation arrives one's home. Almost every Hindu awaits this festival where they get a lot of time for themselves for refreshment from the monotonous routine. They enjoy and relax during this fifteen-day festival where they spend their quality time with their family and closest friends.

Dashain is celebrated for 10 days worshipping the different names of Goddess Durga. Durga is symbolised as the emblem of power, strength, prosperity and the victory of good over evil. It is believed that Goddess Durga slaughtered the evil monster Mahisashur and made the universe a better place for Gods, Goddesses and People. She is believed to have fought the demon for nine long days and earned a glorious victory on the tenth day. So the tenth day of Dashain is Vijaya Dashami. Vijaya: Victory, Dashami: Tenth day.

The first day is celebrated as Ghatasthapana. Ghata: pot, sthapana: organize. So to organize a pot full of pure river sand sprinkled with grains to be offered to the Goddess is considered auspicious and endowed. For the next five days, Goddess Durga is worshipped with different names. The seventh day is Fulpati with literally means flower and leaves. Flowers and leaves and plants like ginger are to be brought into the house at the place of worship.

The eighth day of Maha Ashtami is celebrated with the sacrifice of blood to the Goddess. Goats, buffalos ducks hens are sacrificed and are then consumed as a blessing.

Maha Nawami is the ninth day where your day to day job is worshipped in the name of Goddess Durga.

The tenth day of Vijaya Dashami is celebrated by putting a red tika mixed with rice grains on our forehead and jamara on our heads. Jamara is grown on the same pot full of sand established on the first day. It is believed to obtain divine power, strength and blessings along with the jamara.

People go from one house to another to receive blessings. They organize feasts and parties. They invite one another and have a grand celebration. They cook delicious foods, sing, dance and enjoy. They enjoy in their own way. They try and fulfill their unfulfilled wishes during the vacation. They plan a long tour with their family and close friends.

Children fly kites and most adults organize a kite flying competition. The blue sky is filled with colourful kites. They play swings made of bamboo sticks and jute rope. But nowadays children have stopped going out. They are more indulged in smartphones, laptop screens and video games. Dashain has become more of a virtual festival than a physical one. I still miss the days when we were so free to enjoy ourselves outside our phone screen and were able to show the real we along with the real happiness.

To sum up people do what they have been wishing to do for a long time during Dashain. They do shopping not only for themselves but for others as well. They exchange gifts and cards and spread love.

Dashain is the festival of love and respect. Dashain is the festival of victory and blessings. Dashain is the celebration of togetherness. Dashain is the festival where you get to know the importance of family, friends and relatives. Dashain is the festival of joy and mirth. So let's just forget the existing animosity and spread the hands of blessings and love.
